I took the recording in the courtyard where the SAIC Foundry holds its annual iron pour every spring. Over the year between the tour and the next pour, I sculpted an original and took a sand mold of the form. However, during the firing, the bottom of the base fused with the kiln shelf. While I was trying to remove the kiln shelf, a section of the piece cracked off, leaving a gaping hole in the bottom. Unfortunately we also discovered that a few other pieces had either fallen off the shelf, or had been knocked aside when my vase rolled over. Argon, 12"x28". Mercury, 12.5"x28". 2013 Neon sound is simply a recording of the spoken names of the three primary lighting gasses used in commercial neon making. Neon and argon are the main gasses, but mercury is added to argon to create the bright blue in the bottom piece.
